How to give out your business card without seeming like a jerk

I launched a new company in November of last year, and we still don’t have business cards. At one time that would have been heresy, but none of the executives my partners and I have met with have asked for a card.

Does that means business cards have gone extinct? No. They still exist—and they still have a role. But there are new protocols to follow, and if you slip up, you may come across as out of touch—or worse.

Before your next networking happy hour, brush up on these tips so you can avoid being that person:

1. Don’t use them to impress

It used to be that business cards were important to show your rank and title. I recall a time when the first thing I looked at when handed a card was the person’s title. I’d catch myself saying “Wow, VP.”

As organizations have flattened and titles are no longer our passport to respect, showing your card can be a bit pretentious—because doing so calls attention to things like rank. Hand your card out and suddenly you cease to be a person of interest at a networking event, and you become a title, a company person. You may be a president or a vice president, but no one will be impressed by that title unless you project those leadership qualities.

Never pass out a card to “pull rank.” It’s so much better to project stature in person, rather than to have a business card speak for you.

2. Don’t rush to give your Card out

When carrying business cards you may be tempted to foist one on someone you’ve just met. All of us have been subject to “Hi, I’m Harry, here’s my card.”

While your intentions may be honorable, that rush to give out your card can send a message that you are insecure or overly anxious to connect. If you’re at a conference or networking event and someone you’ve just met pulls out a business card the moment you two begin speaking, it will feel like you’re being sold by someone who is desperate to sell. Not a great look.

In the same vein, it’s not going to win you any points if you pull out your card too soon when you’re actually trying to sell someone a product or service. Do that, and it will appear that you’re closing on a customer too soon.

3. Choose the right situation

So when should you pull out a card and give it to a new acquaintance? When you have a reason to believe the other person needs or wants the information that’s on your card.

Suppose you’ve been chatting with a prospective client at a networking event, and you both have talked about a business opportunity. There’s a shared agreement about the need to talk further. In such cases, there is no reason to hold back on card giving. It’s the professional thing to do. Say, “Here’s my card, I look forward to the prospect of working with you and your team.”

As you give your card, ask for the other person’s business card. This suggests the beginning of a relationship and means that you have the power to follow up, rather than waiting on that person. Just because they have your card doesn’t mean they’ll take the lead in building the relationship. If it’s in your interest to close a sale or further connect, take the initiative to reach out to that individual.

4. Make sure it’s presentable

Your card represents you, so it should make a good impression. Keep it in a card holder, so when you pull it out it is not dirty or creased. You don’t want to be the person who has to say, “Sorry, this card is a bit of a mess, but it’s the last one I have and it got caught in the debris of my purse.” That’s no better an impression than wearing a shirt with a stain on it, or a rumpled dress.

5. Think about what the card says

The final step in using your business card is to look squarely at it and say to yourself, “What does this say about me?” This is your opportunity for self-reflection.

Ask yourself, “Am I proud of what this card says about me? Do I like my title? My company? The quality (or lack thereof) of the card itself?” Your business card says a lot about your identity, and a close look at it will tell you whether you are in the right job or company. Looking at it should make you proud.

7 Ways I Overcame Mommy Guilt to Start My First Business

Being a working mom and starting your own business are arguably two of the most stressful and rewarding accomplishments of a woman's life. Combine the two by starting your own business working from home and you've got a whole new set of emotions on hand, one of which is likely to be "mommy guilt."

It's that overwhelming feeling when you are working extremely hard to start your business and you feel like you're neglecting your responsibilities as a mom. I know the feeling all too well -- I have four children under the age of 10 and I started, and still successfully run, my business from home.

Was it easy? Not at first. My mom guilt was at times overwhelming, but the good news is that I found ways to overcome that guilt by creating balance with time management, planning and even involving my children in the business.

"Lean in" to distraction.

Inevitably, when you're in "go" mode (aka highly productive time) someone you love will try to get your attention and the quick answer is usually "Honey, not now, I'm busy" to try to get the distracting person to go away as quickly as possible. When these distractions are caused by your children, it can cause increased mommy guilt and resentment.

For me, I find the more I resist the distraction, the longer it lasts. So, I decided to "lean in" to the distraction. If someone wants to snuggle with me, I give them a great big hug. If someone has a question, I give them my full attention and address the question and then we both happily return to what we were doing.

If I'm in the middle of something I really can't stop doing, I'm up front with my children about it. We make a plan together for a later time when we can engage in what they needed in that moment.

Make a game out of quiet time.

One of the biggest challenges I've experienced has been trying to figure out how to keep the kids quiet when I'm on the phone. They are, after all, young kids who like to have fun. I made a sign for my office door, but I knew the two younger kids weren't going to read it and understand, so I made a game out of learning what the sign meant.

The "Mom's on the phone game" consisted of us walking up to the door together, seeing the sign, covering our mouths and tiptoeing away, all while seeing who could be the quietest. Gamification for the win.

Make a to-do list for work and home.

Prioritizing your to-dos with a clean, effective list can help you manage what needs your attention the most throughout the day. Often, people make to-do lists that focus on either business or home life, but when you work from home it can be hard to differentiate between the two.

Instead, I suggest combining your lists. Consider adding things like grocery shopping, going to the bank or walking to check the mail. These home items are simple things that can be done with the kids and provide quality time together.

Create million-dollar moments.

Quality tends to be more important that quantity, and that's true when it comes to relationships with family, especially children. Even if we spend every waking moment with our kids, if we're stressed out and resentful all the time, are we really doing them a service?

Looking back, have you ever had a moment with the kids where you might say "I wouldn't trade that for a million bucks"? If you reflect on some of your favorite moments, you'll start to notice a common thread in them. Maybe it was a moment where everyone was getting along, or when you were enjoying something beautiful outside.

When you know what these moments are, you can start replicating these experiences more often. Even if all you have is five minutes, you can still inject that spirit of warmth, acceptance and playfulness into time with the kids. When you plan your schedule for work time, be sure to include a conscious effort to plan moments with the family as well.

Involve the kids in your business.

It may sound strange but involving my children in the business is one of the biggest ways I overcame my mommy guilt. My oldest has an entrepreneurial spirit and a wealth of creative ideas, so I started involving him in business decisions or brainstorming sessions whenever the opportunity came up. By involving him, he feels like he is part of what I am creating.

Remain sane.

Become a success magnet by staying sane at all times. If you break down, the business will break down. If you're raising a family and building a business at the same time, the stakes are high. Your sanity, peace of mind and general well-being are the greatest predictors of your success.

One of the best things you can do to maintain your sanity as a parent is to stay focused on your own business and quit trying to change your kids. Love them while they learn from their mistakes.

Turn parenting into a business asset.

Parenting can be a fantastic business school because as a parent you're always selling. You have to figure out what makes something attractive to someone else, and it pays to notice what works and what doesn't.

I believe the most effective thing you can do as a parent is the exact same thing you can do as a business owner: Be in tune with what your kids (or customers) want most at any given time and figure out how to effectively communicate that what you're offering is going to get them what they want.

Overcoming mommy guilt is something that can take some time and practice until you find a rhythm that works for your life. During all of this, don't forget to take some time for you -- step away from the computer, turn off your cell phone alerts/notifications and enjoy the day.

Putin in Tehran hails Iran cooperation on Syria, eyes business

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Iran's leadership Wednesday, with the two Damascus allies pushing a peace deal on Syria and looking to boost business despite US opposition to a landmark nuclear deal.

The Kremlin strongman's first visit to Iran since 2015 comes as Moscow seeks to turn its game-changing military intervention in Syria into a concerted push to bring a halt to fighting in the country with the help of Tehran, President Bashar al-Assad's other key backer.

"We are working very productively with Iran and we manage to coordinate our positions on Syria," Putin said after talks with Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani and the Islamic republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Russian leader insisted that thanks to a joint push with rebel supporter Turkey, "the situation on the ground in the fight against terrorism and the negotiating process are developing very positively".

Khamenei said the "good cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in Syria shows that the two countries can realise their objectives even in difficult terrain", and insisted that all solutions to the conflict come "from inside the country".

Russia, Iran and Turkey pledged after a latest round of negotiations in Kazakhstan on Tuesday to bring the Syrian regime and its opponents together for a "congress" to push peace efforts in the Russian city of Sochi on November 18.

The three key players have organised a series of peace talks in the Kazakh capital Astana this year, agreeing on the establishment of "de-escalation" zones in various parts of the war-torn country.

Rosneft eyes major projects

Putin's visit -- which in addition involved a three-way summit with Rouhani and the leader of ex-Soviet Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev -- also followed a hike in tensions over the 2015 Iran nuclear deal after US President Donald Trump refused to certify the agreement last month.

Tehran signed the deal, which saw sanctions lifted in return for limits on Tehran's atomic programme, with six countries including Russia and the United States, and Moscow has slammed Trump's "aggressive and threatening rhetoric" against Iran.

While Putin said only that the two sides had discussed the deal, Russian companies looked to press on with taking advantage of the business opportunities that it has presented.

State oil giant Rosneft and the National Iranian Oil Company signed a roadmap agreement with an eye to developing joint projects worth up to $30 billion, Rosneft head Igor Sechin was quoting as saying by Russian news agencies.

Sechin said the two sides were looking to seal binding deals within a year to work on a "whole series of fields, oil and gas", and that eventual output could total 55 million tonnes of oil a year.

The potentially mammoth deal would boost Rosneft's push in the Middle East and aid the Kremlin's ambitions of bolstering its influence in Iran and the broader region.

Moscow and Tehran have had close political and economic relations, and in the nuclear field Russia has already built one reactor at Iran's Bushehr plant and just started work on two new ones.

Syria peace push

The military might of Moscow and Tehran in Syria has helped prop up Assad's forces and turn the protracted conflict in his favour with a string of key battlefield victories.

Since the start of the year, Russia has looked to cement the gains from its intervention by spearheading the peace push at talks in Kazakhstan, positioning itself as a broker between key players Iran and Turkey and largely bypassing the West.

Up until now the focus has been on quelling the violence on the ground and the three powers have established four "de-escalation zones" around rebel-held territory in the country.

The zones were initially credited for bringing about a significant reduction in bloodshed, but international aid groups say they are currently failing to curb the fighting.

Now Moscow seems keen on expanding its peace drive in search of a political settlement.

The push on Syria comes as ties between both countries and Washington have frayed still further since Trump moved into the White House in January.

Despite initial opposition, Trump in August signed off on a sanctions bill targeting Russia, Iran and North Korea after it was passed overwhelmingly by Congress.

Putin's arrival came a day after the US Treasury added 40 Iranian individuals and entities already targeted by sanctions to a counter-terrorism blacklist.

How Cuba's growing internet is fuelling new businesses

As the internet becomes more widespread in Cuba, online start-ups are emerging. But the problems many of the companies hope to address are also a reminder of how far the island has to go.
Bernardo Romero Gonzalez, a 33-year-old software engineer from Cuba, launched his new business this month: a website where people can order island-made products such as soap, bouquets of flowers and cakes for home delivery.
"It's like Amazon for Cuba, but with a difference," he told an audience of New York techies at a conference this month.
The summary was a classic start-up pitch, but it also underscored the obstacles when it comes to starting an online business in the Caribbean country.
Mr Gonzalez is counting on buyers from the Cuban diaspora, which already plays a role in the economy, sending money and other products to the island.
But the infrastructure doesn't exist for domestic buyers to sustain the market.

Growing internet
Internet access among Cuba's 11.2 million people is growing.
Between 2013 and 2015, the share of the Cuban population using the internet jumped from about a quarter to more than 35%, according to estimates from the International Telecommunications Union.
The growing market has helped draw the attention of internet giants, such as Airbnb, Netflix and Google, which installed servers on the island and started hosting data there last month.
The rise is also fuelling activity among local entrepreneurs, who are launching domestic versions of sites such as the crowd-review business directory Yelp.
But there's a long way to go.

'Third world conditions'
Less than 6% of Cuban households had internet access at home in 2015, one of the lowest rates in the western hemisphere, according to the ITU. (In the UK, that figure tops 91%.)
Wi-fi hotspots in parks and other public places operated by the state-run telecom company remain the primary way to log on.
Service at the hotspots is often slow, expensive and selective, with the government restricting access to the full range of internet sites.
The constraints are shaping the emerging Cuban start-ups.
At this month's TechCrunch conference in New York, Mr Gonzalez shared a stage with Kewelta, a firm focusing on advertising within decentralised online and offline networks, and Knales, which provides updates on weather, news and other events via text messages and phone calls.
Knales co-founder Diana Elianne Benitez Perera told the audience that "Cubans are disrupters by definition. We always find the way to have first world conditions with third world conditions."
'Change in the air'
The government in recent years has taken some steps to boost internet access, increasing wi-fi hotspots in parks and other places, lowering prices and experimenting with home installations.
The measures come amid broader economic changes in Cuba, after the Castro regime loosened rules for private enterprise and the Obama administration eased the US embargo, unleashing large numbers of US travellers.
The Cuba Emprende Foundation started working with the Catholic Church in Cuba about five years ago as the reforms started, funding four-week courses in entrepreneurship from which more than 3,000 people have graduated.
The Foundation helped organise the 10x10KCuba start-up competition in which both Diana and Bernardo participated last year, that led to the invitation to the Tech Crunch conference in New York in May.
"There's change in the air," says Anna Maria Alejo, one of the people who helped organise the TechCrunch panel and helped raise about $10,000 (£7,700) to pay for eight entrepreneurs to attend the conference.
"We're not exactly sure where things will go, but there's a lot of optimism among these young people," she says.

'Workarounds'
Cuba has a relatively high number of well-trained software engineers, especially for a country with its size and degree of internet access, said Kirk Laughlin, managing director of NearShore Americas.
The media advisory company published a report in 2015 that highlighted the island's potential as a hub for cheap IT labour.
But Mr Laughlin says he's been disappointed by how slowly the Cuban government has moved to improve the broadband network, especially given interest from international companies and numbers of educated Cubans opting to leave and take their chances elsewhere.
"There is such an opportunity to leapfrog ahead and really light up the island with really robust broadband. That is just not happening," he says.
"When it comes to online start-ups, there's a lot of workarounds".
"That's great that people have the ingenuity and creativity and in some ways we should applaud that," he says.
"But it's still a long way to go to get into the league that Cuba has great qualifications to participate in."

'The companies are waiting'
Some say the changes could accelerate after Raul Castro retires next year.
In speeches, Mr Castro's presumed successor, vice president Miguel Diaz-Canel, has indicated a more open attitude, said Larry Press, a professor emeritus at California State University Dominguez Hills, who has researched the internet in the developing world and writes a blog on Cuba.
Mr Press said media recently praised Revolico, a Craigslist-like site that was blocked by the government after its launch in 2007. More recently, it has been celebrated and has inspired competitors.
But those steps aside, a lot of work remains, he says.
"Those indicate a change of attitude, not a giant change of reality."
Mr Gonzalez, who has also started computer repair and web development businesses, said he thinks the moment for Cubazon is now, while shipping to Cuba from the US remains limited.
He and the staff from his current business are working to sign up more businesses to sell their wares on Cubazon.
Many of the people he's talking to don't have an online presence, he says, but can see the possibility: "The companies are waiting for us."
Still, he adds, his primary focus for the moment is a basic one: "My goal currently is working."

What works when negotiating a business deal?

Q I've read that the key to negotiation is to never go alone and always understand what the other party needs, not just what they say they want.

What have you found effective when negotiating a deal?

A It helps to have someone with you, but don't leave the negotiation to a professional advisor; you are the best person to judge the right deal.

The right price isn't just about price/earnings ratios or valuing the balance sheet; all that matters is what it's worth to you. If you plan to buy a business, before starting any discussions, get to know as much as you can about your acquisition target.

Don't just sit at a desk pouring over their figures. Experience the business first-hand. In my case, that has always meant visiting lots of the target's shops. You want to know more about the business than the person who's selling it.

Don't be too greedy; people who try to drive a hard bargain don't always finish up doing the deal. There's nothing wrong with being friendly with the opposite side; you're much more likely to reach an agreement with someone whom you like. Get to know the person you're negotiating with and work out what they really want out of the deal. If possible, try to achieve the right result for both sides, so that everyone is a winner.

Be wary when bidding for a business that's doing well. You will probably pay a fancy price and will have to work hard to get any return on your investment. As long as you have a turnaround plan, it's almost always better to buy poor-performing companies. It can be tough bargaining with the owner of a private business; people negotiating on behalf of public companies aren't dealing with their own money.

Once you finally agree the heads of terms, keep an eagle eye on your lawyers, who are apt to start a totally new round of negotiations, supposedly on your behalf, with the law firm acting for the other side. Keep close contact with your opposite number – the new best friend who has agreed the deal – to make sure that this legal bickering doesn't drive a wedge between you.

With luck you will sign a contract that follows your original agreement, but be warned: most lawyers will make sure that the exchange of contracts takes place in the middle of the night.

We Need To Take Time To Prepare For Our Business

For Business owners, forming a business is a courageous step on the road to creating wealth and personal independence and freedom. In business, your day is always complete with many challenges. Dependent on the business and your daily role in it, the issues that you as an owner deal with, are of course many and varied. It's easy for the days, weeks and months to move by quickly without really taking a look at what is driving the business activity and direction. Almost everything that goes on in the business and the related business problems can appear to become almost automatic.

Many company founders, because of their emotional connection with the birth of the company, also act like a parent to their company. They think about the company subjectively, and not as they should, objectively. The company may have been formed out of a great idea and with the right intentions, but without any major objective planning. This means they don't always make appropriate judgements about the company direction, or action plans. They also may not have a defining purpose about the business, which effects the direction of company as well as personal activity. Also, they may not have an investor's view of it, and are not sufficiently market driven. Indeed, one of the main reasons that businesses fail is lack of appropriate action at the right time.

Allied to all this unfortunately, is the fact that a majority of businesses do not give appropriate returns on the initial investments of time, energy and funding. At Start-Up also, the owners and partners may fail to clarify the idea sufficiently, before they plough resources, time and money into pursuing the business idea.
Did You Plan This?

Examples of this are quite common in many businesses. They have a knock-on affect in all areas of the business. Most Business founders do not think and plan an Exit Strategy and how they will leverage sufficient financial returns from the business over time. They may not assess accurately, the feasibility of the ideas and assumptions about the business, prior to setting off on a course of action. They may not 'run the numbers' effectively enough to challenge their assumptions about the financial viability and cash flow potential of the business.

In assessing the likelihood of the product and service being successful, examples of factors that very often are not assessed sufficiently are, size of potential market, level of customer need for the service or product, the length of the sales cycle and the buying process, the Psychology behind the purchasing decision, profit margin, how often repeat sales will happen, route to market and possible exclusivity. There's a very competitive landscape out there, and only those who have designed an effective and 'practical' strategy and plan will survive and thrive.

In the Sales and Marketing function, an unclear strategy can mean we haven't defined our target market and client profile. Market and customer profiling is very important, but not always thorough. Awareness of competition, pricing, brand issues as well as the chosen communication and promotion channels to prospects and clients are also important. We may not have defined clearly enough, who we are going to market to, who we serve and what are their real needs. Additionally, what business problems does the target customer experience, that we could help them solve. In growing a business, if you are always thinking about "how you can get more sales at company 'X'", and not "How can I help Company 'X' get more business, or solve their business challenges and problems, you're possibly heading in the wrong direction. You must get to know all about your customer.

All of this of course will manifest in undeveloped prospecting and opportunity management processes. It can also result in poor motivation to close sales for your company or time spent chasing business that really doesn't fit with your target market strategy, or that you in reality won't or can't win.
